Chapter Twenty-One

February 10th, 2017. 6:21pm.

Katy looked at the couch, eyebrows raised. “What we did.” Her stomach felt like it was tied in knots, and butterflies churned her gut, but she stayed steady. “I liked it.”

There was a faint blush on Alex’s cheeks, and it warmed Katy’s heart. “Me too.” Her words were soft, and she wasn’t entirely looking at Katy.

“I just,” Katy hesitated. She wasn’t even certain it was anything Alex was interested in, or whether it had been a one night thing, or anything, but she felt it was important that she communicate everything that was in her head. “I’m not up for a relationship, not… right now.”

Alex was nodding before she finished. “I understand.”

Katy studied her for a moment, thoughtful. She hadn’t said she wasn’t interested, or that it wasn’t something she would have been willing to consider. She just said she understood. “What do you want?” she asked softly.

Alex’s smile was sad. “I have no idea.”

For some reason that answer warmed Katy’s gut. At least she wasn’t the only one who wasn’t sure, the only one who wasn’t entirely certain as to where she wanted to take her life or where it would go. “We could just enjoy it for now,” Katy said softly, her gaze flickering between Alex’s lips and eyes.

Alex bit her lip, something Katy would have sworn happened only in romance novels. Katy held her breath. There were ethical issues, that much she knew, but it’d been so long since she had met someone who she was actually attracted to, someone that could help her get lost in her own mind and escape from everything that was happening. She wasn’t entirely ready to give Alex up.

Katy leaned forward slightly, the frisson of naughtiness sliding down to settle in her stomach, with the knowledge that she was doing something she shouldn’t. Alex met her halfway, their lips touching. Katy’s eyes fluttered shut, and Alex’s lips were agreeably soft against hers. Her lips parted ever so slightly, enough for Katy’s tongue to trace the outline of her lower lip. Alex made a soft noise underneath her and pulled Katy closer.

Katy went, willingly, settling on Alex’s lap with her thighs bracketing Alex’s. The shoulder holster that held Alex’s gun was digging into her sides a bit, but she didn’t care. All she wanted was to forget. Anything else was just collateral.

The sharp ringing of Alex’s phone surprised both of them. Katy jolted up so fast she almost whacked Alex, but she tried to be more careful as she got off her lap, cheeks flushed. It was so not appropriate, but she so didn’t care. That was probably a bad thing. No, strike that. It was a bad thing. She barely noticed Alex answer the phone.

God, she was a horrible mother.

“What?” Alex’s voice caught her off guard, the surprise there as Alex sat up. Her eyes were wide, her knuckles white where she held her phone.

“What’s wrong?” Katy’s heart skipped a few beats and started thudding loudly in her chest.
